25-30 Months: Pretend Play and Following Two-Step Directions
At this age, toddlers often use around 50 words, follow two-step directions, and enjoy pretend play like make-believe cooking or caring for a doll. Based on CDC resources, the following play ideas may be helpful at this age.
Sensory Play
- Take walks or wagon rides together to explore the outdoors.
- Keep offering toys with a variety of textures.
Physical/Gross Motor Play
- Kicking a ball helps build balance and coordination.
- Try games like follow the leader or a simple parade to practice controlling movement.
Fine Motor & Exploration Play
- Let your toddler solve small problems on their own, like standing on a step stool to reach something.
- Encourage taking off loose pants or an open jacket, and let them twist doorknobs or unscrew lids to build wrist control.
Language & Social Play
- Set up a regular reading time and let your toddler point to objects in the pictures.
- Encourage phrases with an action word, like “shot it in the hoop.”
- Try pretend play or dress-up, and sing simple songs together, like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
Play Tips for This Age
Saying “Look at me!” to show off a new skill is common at this age. Following simple routines and practicing sharing toys or taking turns during play can also be woven naturally into everyday activities.
When to Consider Talking with a Pediatrician
If your toddler isn’t putting two or more words together, can’t follow a simple two-step direction, or shows no interest in pretend play by around 30 months, checking in with a pediatric provider may be helpful. This information isn’t a diagnostic tool and doesn’t replace advice from a medical professional.
