12 Months: Cruising, Gestures, and First Words

Around their first birthday, many babies start cruising along furniture and using gestures to communicate.

Social/Emotional

Plays interactive games with you, like pat-a-cake.

Language/Communication

Waves “bye-bye.”
Calls a parent “mama,” “dada,” or another special name.
Understands “no” — pauses briefly or stops when you say it.

Cognitive (Learning, Thinking, Problem-Solving)

Puts something in a container, like a block in a cup.
Looks for things they saw you hide, like a toy under a blanket.

Movement/Physical Development

Pulls up to stand.
Walks while holding on to furniture (cruising).
Drinks from a cup without a lid as you hold it.
Picks up small food bits between thumb and pointer finger.

Caregiving Tip

Since babies are preparing to walk, going barefoot or wearing non-slip socks is considered helpful for foot-sole sensation. As babies pick up small objects more, choking risk rises too — check that no small items are within reach.

When to Consider Talking with a Pediatrician
